We have a Homework Timetable to help plan the workload for students to complete independent study. We hope you will find this helpful and informative as to expectations. In the following tables, you will find the homework timetables for each year group in every subject.
English
Years 7 and 8 Students will be expected to complete a homework task per fortnight. This could be a task on Seneca, a creative task, or a research task which will enrich their curriculum learning. Homework may also include spelling lists and knowledge organiser quiz revision.
Years 9, 10 and 11 Students will be expected to complete extended writing tasks, which could include exam responses, creative writing tasks, text-related worksheets, analytical responses or plans for exam style questions, and making use of their notes and knowledge organisers to support revision of curriculum learning. In addition, students will be set assignments using Seneca. This will involve retrieval practise, and knowledge boosts of curriculum learning, as well as revising for upcoming assessments as part of their homework.
Maths
KS3 and KS4: Pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4 are set a weekly Sparx homework task designed to support current curriculum learning while also revisiting previously taught topics. These tasks are mapped to the KS3 National Curriculum and the Edexcel GCSE specification respectively. Pupils should aim to spend around one hour per week on their homework or strive to achieve 100% completion. Sparx uses a smart algorithm to tailor questions to each pupil’s ability, promoting intelligent practice that has been proven to boost both engagement and learning outcomes.
KS5: A Level students (KS5) are expected to complete homework on a near-daily basis. These tasks extend classroom learning and help embed higher-level mathematical concepts. In addition to set homework, pupils are encouraged to engage with private study materials and complete additional exercises as directed by their class teacher. This independent study is essential for developing the depth of understanding required at A Level.
Science
KS3 Science students in years 7 & 8 will receive a weekly piece of homework relating to the topic that they are studying at the time. This will be set via the Seneca platform giving students the chance to practise, see extra information and learning around the topic and get instant feedback on their homework.
KS4 Triple Science Students and Higher Tier students in years 9, 10 & 11 will receive subject specific homework (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) from their teacher. This will be in the form of Seneca tasks and assignments. Students are encouraged to use Seneca to extend their learning beyond the classroom by exploring the full range of resources that Seneca has to offer.
KS4 Foundation tier students will receive a weekly piece of homework from their Science teacher. This will be set on the Seneca platform and will give valuable support to retaining information over the long term. Teacher may also set assignments relating to previous topics to help the long-term recall of information.
KS5 Biology students will receive regular weekly homework from their teachers. This may be in the form of research tasks, extended writing assignments, past exam questions, reading around the subject material or reading ahead for lessons to come.
KS5 Medical Science students receive weekly homework from their subject teachers, and this may include research tasks, extended writing assignments, preparation for controlled assessment and/or coursework pieces, past exam questions, tasks from the Pearson Online platform, reading around the subject material or reading ahead for lessons to come.
Geography
For KS3 - Three main pieces of homework set fortnightly, where students will be expected to do a creative, research or written task. For the other 3 weeks students will: revise for the assessment completing Seneca revision; revise for a vocabulary test; complete one home learning task from the knowledge organiser.
For KS4 - Three main pieces of homework set fortnightly, where students will be expected to do a research, written or revision task. For the other 3 weeks students will: revise for the assessment completing Seneca revision; revise for a vocabulary test; complete one home learning task from the knowledge organiser.
For KS5 - Research or reading tasks set weekly on TEAMS for both Physical and Human Geography. Revision termly set via workbooks, Seneca or use of knowledge organiser. Independent study work to also be completed in their Directed Study time.
History
KS3 - 3 pieces of homework a term, set once a fortnight with T band on Week A and J band on Week B. Students will: revise for the assessment completing a pre-prepared revision sheet; revise for a vocabulary test; complete one home learning task from the knowledge organiser - chosen by the class teacher.
KS4 - 3 pieces of homework a term (timetabled) with an additional extended revision task set by the class teacher that focuses on the term's assessment - totalling 4 per fortnight.
RE
In KS3 and KS4 Short Course, students will be given one piece of homework a term with an additional piece that utilises their knowledge organiser. For KS4 Full Course there will be two pieces of homework set a term. There is time allocated on the homework timetable for students to ensure that they work on RE, although this will not be the day of their usual RE lesson, this aims to keep students on track to complete the work by the end of the term.
MFL
Students will complete a weekly homework task on the www.sentencebuilders.com website to consolidate their learning and practise vocabulary taught in lessons. This will be monitored by the class teacher.
KS3 students will focus on practicing the vocabulary learned in lessons. KS4 students will alternate some weeks with revision of past topics to consolidate prior knowledge. Year 11 students may also be set specific tasks through Seneca.
In addition, students are encouraged to use the homework tasks in their Knowledge Organisers to complement their revision.
ICT/Computing
Students are set a piece of homework per week on Knowitallninja to complement their ICT theory knowledge. In year 7, students will be asked to complete one piece of homework every two weeks linked to the topic they covered in the lesson before.
Art/Music/Drama/Tech
Year 7 and 8 Students complete their homework projects over the course of the academic year. There is time allocated on the homework timetable for students to ensure that they work on their projects, although this will not be the day of their usual lesson(s). This aims to keep students on track to complete the work by the end of the term.
Food Tech
Years 7 & 8 are allocated homework during their theory lesson. This maybe preparation for practical sessions that follow.
Business Studies
Homework for Business Studies will be set weekly every Tuesday via Seneca. Each task will have a deadline of the following Tuesday when a new assignment will be set.
In Year 9, students will be assigned tasks based on the GCSE topics they are due to be studying throughout year 10 & 11. To achieve the best outcomes, students are expected to complete the assigned task and use additional online revision tools to reinforce their understanding.
For Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), homework will focus on the topics currently being covered in lessons. While minimal use of online revision sources is permitted, students are encouraged to complete the tasks from memory wherever possible to build exam confidence and aim for the highest grades.
Dance
Years 9, 10 and 11 Students will be expected to complete one written piece of homework per fortnight. This could include exam responses, knowledge retrieval, analysis responses or plans for exam responses. Students will also be expected to complete practical tasks as part of their homework which could include a lunchtime rehearsal at school of the material delivered in class or a choreographic task which pupils would be expected to create at home. The dance studio is available to pupils during lunchtime and after school should students require space to practice. Students may also be asked to revise for upcoming assessments as part of their homework, making use of their notes and Knowledge Organiser.
Media
Students generally are set a piece of Media Theory piece of homework once a week on Seneca to reinforce their classroom learning. However, there will be occasions where students are set a practical piece of homework such as taking photographs to complement their practical classwork or coursework.
Health and Social Care/Child Development
Year 9 Health and Social Care & Child Development Students are given three homework tasks a term. This could include revision for upcoming assessments or tasks related to the lesson content. For example a case study, set of questions or a research task
Year 10 homework is set related to the controlled assessments. This will involve carrying out research on the assignment brief and planning their work.
year 11 homework is set related to controlled assessment catch-up or exam practice. This will involve carrying out research on the controlled assessment assignment brief or practice exam questions.
Psychology
At the end of every complete lesson, students are expected to complete an A3 essay planning sheet. This serves two purposes: to consolidate the learning from the lesson and to create a revision resource for the two-year course and the summer examinations.
In addition, students are set one weekly 16-mark essay, dedicating 20 minutes to its completion. This is designed to develop skills in knowledge recall, application of stimulus material, and analysis and evaluation. Students are also expected to conduct independent work in directed study using Psych Boost (on YouTube) and Microsoft Teams to review their Cornell notes and relevant podcasts.
Criminology
In this subject, the first half of the term focuses on preparation for the students' controlled assessment. Homework involves reviewing Cornell notes and completing final exam notes on A3 sheets. At the end of a live marking session, students are also required to make improvements to their work in preparation for the controlled assessment. In directed study, students have access to Teams to review all past lesson content.
In the second half of the course, students focus on the summer examinations and follow a similar process: preparing A3 notes and completing weekly 9-mark essays, which are typically timed for 10 minutes.
KS4 Sports Science
If students are studying a coursework unit i.e. such as R181 or R182 they will have a set coursework task that is ongoing. Students will be expected to complete 30 minutes of ongoing coursework at home each week, ideally on the day their teacher sets it - this is accessible through Microsoft Teams. Students in Year 11 studying R180 will be set homework based on exam revision, which could involve using our online learning platform 'The EverLearner' - students will be provided with a username/password. Again, this will be 30 minutes+ per week.
Sixth Form
The expectation for Sixth Form is that they will receive a set homework each week per subject and there will also be set independent study work to be completed in their Directed Study time (as shown on their timetable). Students should check this on Arbor and we encourage the Sixth Form to work closely with their subject leaders should any concerns arise around set work or the Sixth Form team. In the Sixth Form working independently is a key skill that we wish to develop, so a range of tasks maybe set including past examination questions, further reading, extended writing, research etc. All work set is overseen by the Director of Subject or Head of Subject within the department area.
Teachers upload all homework onto Arbor, students are expected to record homework in their planners. We encourage parents to check planners once a week and sign, so there is transparency around the work being set and completed. Parents can also track homework on the Arbor portal, available from the school website.
Students have Arbor logins, and can access the Student portal via the school website. The Arbor app is not recommended for following the progress of homework set, so it is best to view this via a web browser. Any support required for Arbor should be reported to: itsupport@abbeyschoolfaversham.co.uk, please include the full name of your child(ren) and the issue you are experiencing. We aim to come back to parents swiftly.
The timetables set for each year group and are designed to spread the workload across the school timetabled weeks (as we operate a two week timetable: Week A & B). The timetable will state which whole subjects ‘all sets’ will be set work for all classes OR specific classes, in this case the class code will be shown i.e. 7T/Ht1.
It’s important that students check their timetable where these codes are shown and record work in their planner – as work is designed to be set in their lessons. Where subjects are in blue text i.e. Art, Tech, RE, Drama & Music are allocated time on the timetable for students to complete work, but these are termly projects that are not set in lessons.
